Future Archaeological Volunteering Projects in Romania

Trying to recreate ancient silex tools. This project is a part of the experimental archaeology work which is undertaken in the winter, when excavation is not possible.

Constructing a general web site about Romanian history. The present ones are very poor quality and lack up-to-date information. This is also a winter project.

Constructing a web site about the Saxon fortified churches from Brasov County. We have all the information that we need and we just have to put it on the Internet. This is also a winter project.

Field walking for discovering new settlements. This is best done in the spring or in the autumn when there is little vegetation obscuring visible signs of potential archaeological sites. In the spring of 2004 we did 1 month of field walking and discovered 3 new settlements.

A lot of the archaeolgical sites that could be visited by tourists are not, because they are not clearly marked or in good enough condition for visitors from Romania and abroad. This part of the project therefore includes making signs explaining the sites in various languages, cleaning the sites and creating accessible pathways around the points of interest.

In the summer we concentrate purely on excavations. In July, August and September we are participating in the ongoing work in Harsova and Bordusani. These are two of the most interesting sites in Romania. There are a lot of other digs that are underway in Romania at this time of the year. The confirmation of exactly which site the Projects Abroad volunteers are working at will be finalized closer to the date.
