Hello from Hollywood! My name is Jennifer Hague, and I recently spent two weeks in wonderful Romania taking part in an archaeological dig at the Deva Citadel in the city of Deva, in Transylvania. I have always wanted to do this, and the experience I had at the Citadel will provide a lifelong, wonderful memory for me. I had a great supervisor named Jozsef and considering I was the only volunteer at the time I got a lot of personal attention and was able to learn quite a bit!

Coming through the arrival gate of Bucharest airport a wave of relief and excitement rushed over me as I spotted the A4 Projects Abroad sign in the line of people waiting. Rushing over I was met by the ever so friendly Leo and another volunteer Kate who was awaiting the arrival of her boyfriend. Waiting for two other volunteers who were to arrive on the same day I listened to Kate's stories of the wonderful hospitality and fabulous time she was having. By the time we left the airport I already felt part of a family and couldn't wait to meet the people I would be staying with.

Emerging from the airport in Bucharest, I scanned the crowd for the 'Projects Abroad' sign and its imposing bearer. I had been warned of Leo's Italian Mafia appearance and demeanor, and I was not disappointed. We had a three hour drive to Brasov and it was a pleasant journey.

At the beginning of May I arrived in Romania to start my two months of digging. I was also looking forward to exploring and learning something about a country I knew virtually nothing about.

Many things tempt visitors to Romania, including prices far lower than Western Europe's, good food, very drinkable local wines, mountain villages, and in Transylvania, of course, the legend of Dracula. Yet I came to Romania to unearth traces of the rich history this country holds, in a field-trip and research internship organized by Projects Abroad.
